How to really respond to a spill...

Cryo ClearTec™ (CCT) products are available in a variety of water treatment and filtration medias in order to meet the needs of today’s demanding environmental incidence responses. The advanced technologies are formulated from modern non-toxic, non-hazardous polymers capable of high sorption efficiencies.  The filtration media kits absorb and solidify a wide variety of fuels, oils, chlorinated solvents including parrafins, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), trichloroethylene (TCE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB).  These filtration applications can save material costs, labor, and disposal volume by as much as 75%.

Cryo ClearTec™ polymers are relatively inert and its solidification process is non chemical. Because of these environmental qualities, CCT products are exempt from CFR regulatory certification for spill response and licensing for use in California state waters. Laboratory sorption efficiencies of 500% (5 grams pollutant to 1 gram of CCT) are common spill response type applications.

Cryo ClearTec™ Particulate is a mixture of hydrocarbon polymers plus additives resulting in a grainy material used in various cleanup operations. However, it is also used for clarification of emulsions, or solidification and removal of various petroleum-based slicks from the surface of water. Once sorbed liquids are solidified (usually within 20 minutes) they are retrievable without loss of their contents caused by handling and the consequent dripping associated with many other products. The CCT Particulate (also used in booms and pillows as the filler) exhibit characteristics that include:

  • Light weight: CCT is made of a light weight polymer that enables rapid deployment and retrieval.
  • Hydrophobic: CCT has no affinity for water and is permanently buoyant both before and after sorption.
  • Stabile: CCT will not release sorbed solidified liquids, even under landfill pressures, and are extremely resistant to release of sorbed solidified liquids upon aqueous contact.
  • Efficient: CCT has low volume increases of sorbed liquids (15% in laboratory test, 25% in field applications).  One pound of CCT will solidify up to 2/3 of a gallon of jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, transformer oil and other liquids into a rubber-like material.

Absorption Capabilities Minimize

E.P.A. APPROVED TECHNOLOGY
The data below represent the quantity of Cryo ClearTec Particulate needed to solidify carious fuels and industrial liquids to the point at which they will pass the E.P.A. 50 PSI landfill pressure test.

PROCEDURE USED
8.1 ml, 12.2 ml, and 16.3 ml volumes of the liquids to be tested were transferred by pipette to a 50 ml.  Erlenmeyer flasks and stoppered with neoprene stoppers.  These test samples were allowed to come to thermal equilibrium at 65°F.  To each test sample a weighed 3.0 gram sample of CCT Particulate was added and agitated.  The samples were allowed to stand for 21 hours at 65°F.  The samples were then subjected to a pressure test in excess of 100 PSI.  The results of this work are summarized in Table 1.
